Hello Parents/Guardians:

Welcome back! Welcome to April and Term 3! It's good to see everyone back from a restful, fun-filled break! This term always seems to speed by - maybe because of the nice weather (typically) or maybe the slide to summer! I'm not sure, but I know there's always lots to do and this term never seems long enough!

A reminder to everyone that if your child is not feeling well - please keep them home to rest and re-cooperate. Having said that - they also need to know that if they miss days, they miss important work that needs to be caught up - either at school or at home. It's important for your child to be pro-active when they get back and to get help from classmates or myself to quickly get caught up with work. Ensure you check the homework page and connect with me for any missed work if your child is absent due to illness. If your child is away sick for an extended period, please contact me for work to be sent home. The items listed below are only the "homework" - it doesn't include any work done in class and not given as homework. Completing and missed work and handing in assignments in a timely manner is a very important skill for students to learn and practice, especially for setting themselves up for success in middle and secondary school. Please ensure you check in with your child every so often to hold them accountable.

I have attached to the bottom of the page the spelling "No Excuse Words" list and the spelling menu (for nightly homework). I have also included a couple of math sites to help students practise their addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts. If you know of any other fun sites, please let me know.

The best way to contact with me (or Ms. Gill should you need to) is via email (shelley_jones@sd33.bc.ca, jasjit_gill@sd33.bc.ca). Please note that during the day I rarely check my email. If you need to get in touch during the day, please call the office and leave a message (604-794-7124).

If Home Due To Illness or Other Absence

  • Read 30 min. - read a book/magazine, comic, newspaper, etc. each day and tell a parent/guardian what they read. Parent/guardian can ask questions about the reading to ensure their child can comprehend and understand what they had read.
  • Spelling words/Sight words - as you wait for your spelling words to come home, each day pick 10 different sight words (list in their planners; can also be found below) and write a sentence for each word. If not sure what the word means then the students can look up the word in a dictionary (https://kids.britannica.com/kids/browse/dictionary)
  • Writing - Keep a book to write in each day. They should be writing for a minimum of 30 minutes each day.
  • Math - Students are working on the Multiplication unit. Students at home can continue to practice multiplication facts. Also, they can start to practice multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication.

**PARENTS/GUARDIANS- Please arrange to pick-up any missed work from their "While You Were Away" folder **

Read the page carefully with your parents and tell me the answer the question that is posed.

Question of the Week:  Earth Day is coming up (Apr 22). What can you do to help the earth?

Our Classroom

In April ...

Math - We will be continuing reviewing multiplication and division facts and learning different ways of how to multiply numbers (1-digit x 2- and 3-digit; 2-digit x 2-digit). We will also be learning/practising various ways of dividing numbers (2-digit by 1-digit; 3-digit by 1 digit). It is important that students practise their multiplication and division facts as this makes the actual multiplication and division of larger numbers easier. This can be done in a fun way by playing various card games with others.

Language Arts - We are continuing to use the various reading strategies (connecting, visualizing, questioning, summarizing) we learned/practised so far this year. This term we will be finishing the class novel "Wonder". Work on these novels is intended to be done at school. We will be practising our oral skills through class/partner discussions and independent reading projects. We will also continue various writing strategies that help us work toward powerful writing. Students will be putting their knowledge of non-fiction text features to work as they create a variety of non-fiction books with Mrs. Van Essen. Each week students continue working on a spelling program. The spelling program meets the student at the level they are at to help improve their spelling abilities. Most of the spelling program is done at home (10 minutes/night).

Socials - With Ms. Gill, students will be covering units in government and residential schools.

Science - In Science our units will be about solutions and solubility and how the earth, moon and sun relate to each other. (Too bad the solar eclipse doesn't pass over us!)

French - We continue our adventures with the French language learning vocabulary related to calendar (days of the week, months of the year), numbers, and weather. We will also do a unit on either food items (pizza) or ourselves - stay tuned!

Fine Arts - We will be continuing to learn how to play the recorder, with the end goal of being able to present our learning at some point in June. We will also be working in drama (with Ms. Gill) to prepare a reader's theatre presentation set for the afternoon of June 5. We will send more information later with details - just save the date!

Social and Personal Responsibilities - Students have a class job that they are responsible for and do on a daily basis. We will be looking at our Term 1 and Term 2 goals and developing and working on Term 3 goals. We will also connect them to the Core Compentencies.
